Photo’s from THE ILLUSTRATED HITCH HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY

Martin contemplates the finished Vogon Ship. Built in only one week (!) it was a real trial to get it done on time. The vogon ship in the studio ready for photographing.

Above and above right, Martin and Jan Bower work on the Interior set of the "Heart of Gold" ship. It was built to 1/18th scale, with the actors superimposed afterwards in the final photos used in the book. The multiple viewscreens were made from 35mm slide mount containers! It has incorporated plumbers fittings, EMA dish heads (for the fountain bowls) and a spiral staircase made from brass rod.

Slartibartfast's car under construction. As with the "Vogon" ship, I had very little time to make it in. It was made from wood, "Isopon" car filler, plastic tube and an egg-shaped canopy, made in two halves, vac-formed over a Jelutong Wood mould.

The "Cantina" scene (wonder were they got that idea from?!) Douglas Adams sits at a table in the foreground with a Madona lookalike (?) and his real-life agent! Also in the shot is everyone who worked on the book. Martin Bower is seen in the background just to the right of Douglas Adam's head, and Jan Bower is in the black spacesuit on the far right.

Once again in the final book photos, actors were superimposed around the model to give the impression the models were full size. Martin polishes the final model before photography begins.

Martin works on Zaphod Beeblebrox's flying camera!

The poster used in shops to advertise the book when it came out. Why this was used I have no idea! I can only asume it was because it was the only photo in the book that had (the late) Douglas Adams in it!
