BBC TV series "TRIPODS" Models

tripod body

The large 6ft high Tripod under construction. The model's legs were moved by 3 members of the SFX crew moving them out of shot below the camera! (Very high tech!)

This section, over 6 feet across, was built specially to incorporate opening miniature hatches for shots where people were seen being taken inside the Tripod to be "capped"

Original master "Head" of the medium sized Tripod

It was built of Fibreglass over a master shape which I carved from Polyurethane foam. The legs were 5 inch diameter EMA plastic tube which I had to slice longways to make tapered. and fully movable 6 inch "ball & socket" joints. The model incorporated opening front hatch, working lights all around the edge, and fully movable legs

Friday Street set.

The full-size Tripod legs at Friday Street in Surrey (where all the early village exteriors were shot) SFX crew in diving suits had to set up steel scafolding rigs underwater to support these legs. In the final shot my 6ft model was superimposed onto these legs, (hence the fact that my model did not have feet) giving the appearance that a huge full-size Tripod was standing in the lake.

I did this shot of the small 11 inch high Tripod models before their delivery to the studio. I made 2 squatting models and 3 standing models. They were made of fibreglass and EMA plastic and brass tubing. In the show they were mostly used for shots where Tripods were seen in the distance.

Two of the principal child actors watch as a third tests out the full-size Tripod's claw used to lift him into the Tripod for the capping ceremony.
