If I had known 10 years ago that it would be that many years before I would finally have all the information on the "2001: A Space Odyssey" Moonbus I needed to make an accurate replica of it, I probably would have given up then & there. But with the kit-spotting help of my friend & colleague, Keith Scaife, who managed to bend images using his "MAC" computer, we finally obtained the info to build the "Moonbus" (or "Rocket Bus" as it is referred to in the film) to studio scale. What follows is the making of one of my favourite designs from many a film. The model actually took around 11 weeks to build, but that was because the master model I made in Perspex (Plexiglas) & Wood was too heavy to be the final model. Also we both wanted a model for ourselves. The result of this was that Keith took moulds from the master model in cold-pour silicone rubber (see the moulding on the "ENTERPRISE "E" for this process) to give us two fibreglass shells that would not weigh a ton & be relatively easy to put lights and/or interiors into, should we wish to do so.
